A new accelerated test for the evaluation of the protective properties of coatings


  Weathering of coatings by natural conditions at climatically different locations provides reliable data on the protective properties of coatings, it is however very time and cost consuming and non-practical for a quick evaluation of coatings. A number of diverse short time tests are therefore in usage by the development and optimization of new protective coatings. The most important requirements on such tests are the appropriate loading conditions, a sensitive quantitative detection of the coating deterioration, a short test duration as well as a good correlation with a natural weathering and a long term performance of coatings. By the development of a new short time test, we tried to fulfi l these requirements as good as possible. For the accelerated aging of coatings we used the concept of the forced internal stress, induced by a thermal cycling, combined with an electrolytic, chemical or UV loading. By this kind of aging/loading both the natural weathering conditions and the standard laboratory tests can be simulated and performed at a shorter time. For the detection of the protection loss the impedance spectroscopy and the scanning Kelvin probe were chosen. Specifi c parameters from this kind of detection provide quantitative criteria for the quantitative evaluation of the protective properties of coatings in the early stages of their testing. Laser marking of coatings on plastics can be realized nowadays by the ablation of laser sensitive coatings, when additional supporting coatings are applied beneath them. By a modifi cation of laser sensitive coatings with special additives, it was possible to perform the laser marking without a supporting coating and thus to simplify the laser marking process. An interesting alternative to the ablative laser marking of coatings represents the non-ablative process. However, it can not be realized by a conventional carbonization or foaming of coatings without their complete or at least partial damage. Corrosion protection with nanoscale anticorrosive pigments in coatings


  For the effi cient corrosion protection of metals and alloys with primers as well as self-healing effects, properties of anticorrosive pigments such as particle size, interaction with binder, barrier effect, release of active species and their transport to the metal surface are of great importance. Conventional and nanoscale corrosion protective phosphate derivates have been investigated to clarify their infl uence on all these factors and ultimately on the effi ciency of the corrosion protection of metallic substrates. The chosen pigments were incorporated into a solvent based epoxy primer and tested on steel, galvanized steel and aluminium substrates with short time tests, electrochemical methods and atmospheric weathering. SEM images of paint cross sections were also taken to visualize the pigment particle distributions. Such advantages of nanoscale pigments as an effi cient corrosion protection, good self-healing and barrier properties have been noticed. An infl uence of the metal surface roughness on these properties was also observed.
