Corrosion and wear behavior of nitrocarburized layer on 42CrMo4 alloy steel formed in the new type of fluidized bed thermo-chemical treatment DOI:10.15199/40.2015.12.3


  In order to improve the service life and functionality of various structural steel components such as gear wheels, toothed rollers, crankshafts, etc., which are subjected to tribological and corrosion impact, a thermo-chemical treatment such as nitrocarburizing is recommended. The aim of the paper is to present the properties of nitrocarburized layers formed on 42CrMo4 alloy steel by the new type of fluidized bed thermo-chemical treatment which is carried out in chemically active powders. Presented method combines the most important advantages of the box and atmospheric fluidized-bed methods. The source of carbon and nitrogen elements is based on a powder mixture of active carbon and the potassium ferrocyanide. Chemically active bed is fluidized by forced vibrations resulted from mechanical vibrations which are subjected to retort. The paper presents corrosion and wear resistance of 42CrMo4 steel after the new method of nitrocarburizing. The results of studies show positive influence of the presence of a thin iron carbonitrides layer formed during nitrocarburizing. Corrosion resistance test performed in a neutral salt spray atmosphere showed increased corrosion properties of steel after such treatment. Thermo-chemically treated samples revealed the first signs of corrosion after 72 hours of test. Wear test carried out in a 3 rollers-cone system showed above 3 times lower wear in comparison with steel after basic heat treatment.
