Elastic optical networks - a new approach for effective provisioning of cloud computing and content-oriented services DOI:10.15199/59.2015.8-9.2

  In last few years, the Internet has evolved from a simple and best effort network towards a complex system offering many advanced services like cloud computing, Content Delivery Network (CDN), Internet of Things, machine-to-machine communication, etc. Many of these new services are highly bandwidth demanding, what triggers the need to update the existing backbone optical networks to avoid network congestion problems [1]- [3]. Moreover, the new services are mostly offered by specialized data centers what changes the network traffic patterns from classical unicast transmissions defined as one-to-one to anycast transmissions defined as one-to-one-of-many. To meet the arising challenges, recently a new technology has been deployed in backbone networks, namely, Elastic Optical Network. The key idea of EONs is to use an optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) that enables to accommodate such high bandwidth demand applications. Another important innovation offered in EONs is a flexible frequency grid allowing better utilization of optical spectrum, advanced transmission and modulation techniques enabling distance adaptive transmissions and new protection techniques based on the bandwidth squeezing [4]- [7]. The main contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we describe the concept of Elastic Optical Networks in the context of provisioning of cloud computing and content oriented services in optical transport networks. Second, we discuss issues related to dynamic routing of joint unicast and anycast traffic in EONs. The reminder of the paper is organized as follows. Section 2 includes a brief discussion on cloud computing and content oriented services. In Section 3, we present main issues related to EONs. Section 4 focuses on problems of dynamic routing in EONs. In Section 5, we introduce algorithms for dynamic routing and Section 6 reports the obtained results. Finally, in Section 7 we conclude our work. NEW S[...]
